An island in the Hibikinada Sea about 12 km north of Asano in Kokurakita Ward, linked to Kokura by a city-run ferry that calls at Umashima. At Senjojiki on the northern tip, a wide rock shelf appears at low tide, and the Ainoshima lookout flag-pole platform, built in 1721, is a prefectural historic site.

Calls at Umashima. Times are the regular Monday–Saturday schedule (outside summer Jul 20–Aug 12, Obon Aug 13–15 and New Year Jan 1–4): from Kokura at 10:30, 14:30 and 17:30; from Ainoshima at 7:00, 13:30 and 15:30. On Sundays and holidays, boats leave Kokura at 9:30, 14:30 and 17:30 and Ainoshima at 7:00, 13:30 and 16:30. The city gives 40 minutes to Ainoshima. The adult one-way fare is ¥600 (city fare page, updated Sep 29, 2023). On busy weekends and holidays, during Obon, or when a replacement boat runs during dry dock, numbered boarding tickets may be handed out from one hour before departures from Kokura, and passengers without one cannot board. Kokura Ferry Landing is about a 10-minute walk from the north exit of JR Kokura Station and has no parking.
