An island of about 720 km² some 380 km southwest of mainland Kagoshima, the third largest of Japan's outlying islands after Okinawa Island and Sado. Its climate is subtropical maritime. Recognized for endemic species such as the Amami rabbit, it was inscribed as a World Natural Heritage site in July 2021.
